Donald Trump recently responded to ongoing criticisms from Democrats, who have been calling both him and his running mate, JD Vance, "weird." In an interview with conservative radio host Clay Travis, Trump countered the attacks, asserting, “They’re the weird ones. Nobody’s ever called me weird. I’m a lot of things, but weird I’m not. And I’m upfront. And he’s not either, I will tell you. JD is not at all. They are.”
This rebuttal came after Vice President Kamala Harris and her team intensified their rhetoric, labeling Trump and Vance as "weird" during campaign events. Harris commented on Saturday at a rally in Massachusetts, “Donald Trump has been resorting to some wild lies about my record, and some of what he and his running mate are saying, it’s just plain weird,” eliciting laughter from the crowd.
The term "weird" has become a recurring theme in Harris' campaign communications, press releases, media appearances, and online memes. This narrative has even been echoed by potential vice-presidential candidates such as Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
These attacks emerged during a challenging news cycle for Trump and Vance, marked by controversial statements from Vance, who referred to Harris and other Democrats as “childless cat ladies” and suggested that parents with biological children should have more political influence. Additionally, Trump faced backlash for remarks made during an interview at the NABJ conference, where he implied that Harris had only recently started identifying as a Black woman and promised to pardon individuals convicted in connection to January 6.
In light of these criticisms, Trump took the opportunity to turn the tables on his opponents, criticizing Democratic policies on issues like the border, taxes, and trans athletes. “The whole thing is weird. And the way they do elections is weird. And they’re the weird ones,” he stated.
