Abraham Kibiwott, aware of the immense challenge ahead, leads Kenya's 3000m steeplechase team in their quest to reclaim the Olympic title in Paris on Wednesday. The team, comprising Kibiwott, Amos Serem, and Simon Kiprop, aims to bring back the gold last won by Conseslus Kipruto at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
The task is daunting, with formidable competitors like Moroccan Soufiane El Bakkali, the 2020 Tokyo Olympic champion, and Ethiopia’s world record holder Lamecha Girma in the line-up. Kibiwott, who finished 10th at the Tokyo Games, acknowledges the significant pressure from home. "The pressure from Kenyans back home is huge considering we are challenging to reclaim a race we had dominated for years," he said.
Despite the pressure, Kibiwott emphasizes the importance of having all three team members in the final. "We are yet to discuss how to approach it but we will surely do it in the morning," he added.
Simon Kiprop, making his Olympic debut, expressed his readiness to face the competition and make history. "It’s very competitive out there. I feel under no pressure but take it as a big challenge (to reclaim the title). We will do everything within our powers to ensure we get back our title," he stated.
With determination and a strategic approach, the Kenyan team is poised to tackle the intense competition and aim for victory in the 3000m steeplechase final.
