Trump made these remarks at a Turning Point Action event in West Palm Beach, Florida. He urged Christians, “Get out and vote, just this time. You won’t have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won’t have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians.”
A spokesperson for Trump’s campaign, Steven Cheung, did not clarify Trump’s comments but stated that Trump was “talking about uniting this country.” Cheung attributed the divisive political climate to a recent assassination attempt on Trump, although investigators have not yet determined the gunman's motive.
In a December interview with Fox News, Trump mentioned he would act as a dictator only on the first day of his presidency to secure the southern border and enhance oil drilling. Despite the U.S. Constitution limiting presidents to two terms, Trump has previously joked about serving more than two terms, referencing Franklin D. Roosevelt’s presidency, the only one to exceed the two-term limit.
Trump's comments highlight the necessity for both parties to mobilize their core supporters in a closely contested election. Historically, Trump has received strong backing from evangelical voters. The race has tightened following President Biden’s decision not to seek reelection, with Vice President Kamala Harris emerging as the Democratic frontrunner. Recent polls indicate that Trump's once-significant lead over Biden has diminished with Harris now in the race.
Harris’s campaign spokesperson, Jason Singer, refrained from commenting directly on Trump’s statements about Christians not needing to vote again.
