Uashin Gishu , 09/08/2023- In an audacious move that has captured
the attention of the nation, Mercy Tarus, a recent graduate from Kabarak
University, has confronted Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii, his deputy John
Barorot, and Senator Jackson Mandago over the contentious Uasin Gishu education
airlift program. The 24-year-old graduate's brave act sheds light on the
struggles faced by many hopeful students and their families, exposing the
deep-seated issues surrounding the failed project.
Tarus, who graduated in 2021, was set to embark on a journey
to further her studies abroad. However, the dreams of many students, including
Tarus herself, were shattered as the much-anticipated program faced numerous
delays and controversies. Her parents, like many others, invested heavily in
the initiative, only to be met with disappointment and financial strain.
In an emotional revelation, Tarus disclosed that the setback
forced her to turn to selling porridge and mandazi during weekends to make ends
meet. Her poignant story resonated with countless individuals who empathize
with the plight of those affected by the ill-fated education airlift.
Tarus, who had been volunteering at a local school, expressed
her frustration at the leaders' apparent disregard for the promises they had
made to the aspiring students. The postponements, excuses, and lack of
transparency have left many feeling betrayed and cheated. The leaders claimed
that international events, such as the Russian invasion of Ukraine, were
responsible for the delays.
"It's a constant cycle of broken promises and dashed
hopes," Tarus asserted. She candidly spoke about her plans to pursue a
diploma course in Social Service at Northern Lights College in Canada, a dream
now overshadowed by the shadows of unfulfilled expectations.
The ripple effect of the program's failure goes beyond
personal aspirations. Tarus raised the issue of mental health, stating that the
financial burden and dashed dreams have led to emotional distress and
depression among many of the affected students and their families. Her father's
reliance on anti-depressants, which he attributes to the ordeal, underscores
the severity of the situation.
Tarus's fearless confrontation of the leaders has not only
earned her admiration but also ignited a broader discussion about
accountability, transparency, and the responsibilities of elected officials.
Her unwavering determination to seek justice for herself and her fellow
students has resonated deeply with a generation that seeks meaningful change.
The incident has prompted the Ethic and Anti-Corruption
Commission (EACC) to launch an investigation into the controversial Finland
airlift program. Senator Mandago, who was involved in the program's inception,
expressed his commitment to cooperate with investigative agencies, stressing
his desire for truth and justice.
As the nation rallies behind Mercy Tarus, her courage serves
as a rallying cry for reform in education and governance. Her story has
highlighted the urgent need for leaders to fulfill their promises, address the
mental health toll on the affected, and ensure that the aspirations of the
nation's youth are nurtured rather than shattered.
